Weekly Writing 10/24
This week I had the pleasure of watching a beautifully made film called Can you ever forgive me? I was able to finish it in one sitting because of how captivating it was, how raw and human. I absolutely loved the monologue at the end of the film where Lee is in court and she states ” If I had put in my work, then I would’ve been opening myself up to criticism”. This rings very true to me, I often feel afraid of putting my work out there and allowing others to read through and critique because it can make me lose hope in my ability to write and create. I absolutely love the inclusion of this quote, it is one of the many parts of being a writer; that insecurity and that need for perfection in your work. It’s essentially what drives Lee to do what she does, that inadequacy she feels in her own work is what allows her to imitate the voices of others so she doesn’t have to use her own. It’s so interesting that just looking at a few letters from the past of the figures she imitates allows her to immerse herself into becoming that person. It shows us how much letters can tell us about a person and their personality and highlights the insight writing styles give us about people. Overall I loved the film and the complexity of the characters, you couldn’t help sympathizing with Lee and her aspirations an the film also helped us understand the value of letters and letter writing.
