Point of Views

Weekly Writing 10/4

This week we looked at short stories and epistolary fiction. We took a look into human connection in midst of a time made up of terror and separation. It was so interesting to listen and read stories being told in the way of letters, not only was it more personal but it was void of outside input which made their perspectives all the more real and genuine. My favorite part of this weeks lessons was reading Counting the Days by Emma Donoghue. It was a compelling read that not only made me want to cry but made me want to read more. It followed a couple who’s perspectives and feelings are articulated in allowing the readers in on their different point of views. Jane a mother with her two kids on a ship sailing towards her husband in a foreign country. I loved the way it was written switching back and forth so eloquently it made you feel so heavily for both Jane and Henry in the story. I loved the little snippets throughout the short story of quotes that the couple remembers from the letters they send to one another during separation. There was a longing in both Jane and Henry’s words. Jane as she faces the troubles of the sea and a desperation that was so evident in Henry as he grew sicker and sicker as the story moved on. This is simply one of many stories that can be revealed through letters during the process of immigration, adapting to a new environment, and being apart from your loved ones.
